Who It's ForĬhrome OS' mostly browser-based design means it's a poor choice for demanding apps like photo or video editing (as is the HP's Pentium Gold CPU), but a fine fit for everyday productivity, schoolwork, email, and web surfing. Its small-footprint, cone-shaped base doubles as a surprisingly high-quality speaker, and it offers a high-res webcam and wireless keyboard and mouse. Its 21.5-inch 1080p screen pivots between landscape (horizontal) and portrait (vertical) modes, letting you switch from enjoying a YouTube or Netflix video to seeing most of a webpage or Google Workspace word processing document without scrolling. Read Our HP Envy 34 All-in-One (2022) ReviewĪt the other end of HP's all-in-one desktop offerings, the under-$500 Chromebase 22 brings the appeal of an easy-to-use, online-friendly Chromebook to your desk or den or kitchen counter. One of PCMag's staffers bought one and edited this writeup on it. Though not cheap, it's not prohibitively expensive, and its 21:9 aspect ratio widescreen is as good as a dual-monitor setup for arranging multiple app windows for max productivity. With Apple taking its 27-inch Retina Display iMac off the market, there's a dearth of premium all-in-one PCs, and the Envy 34 fills the niche nicely. It's also a lively performer, even for mid-level gaming thanks to a discrete Nvidia GeForce GPU instead of the usual integrated graphics, and has all the ports, memory, and storage you'll likely need as well as a Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. Read Our Dell Precision 7920 Tower (2020) Reviewĭid we just say a sharper screen would be nice? HP's Envy 34 all-in-one offers a massive (34-inch diagonal) 5K display with panoramic 5,120-by-2,160-pixel resolution, as well as a 16-megapixel webcam that magnetically snaps almost anywhere along the top or either side of the screen to make you look your best. But when only the ultimate will do, scientists and engineers will be grateful for this monster's muscle. Many software applications (including our performance benchmarks) actually can't take full advantage of the 7920's power. Obviously, ordinary workstations like Dell's more mainstream Precision or HP's Z or Lenovo's ThinkStation desktops can handle almost all creative, architectural, and data analysis jobs. Mere 2D design apps like AutoCAD are appetizers for this Dell it's built for near-supercomputer levels of data science, 3D rendering, and simulation modeling. But those rigs are wimps next to the Precision, which boasts two 24-core Intel Xeon Platinum processors, 96GB of error-correcting-code memory, 16.5TB of storage spread across five drives, and a 48GB Nvidia Quadro RTX 8000 graphics card. Offhand, we're not sure we've ever tested a more expensive PC than the Dell Precision 7920 Tower-our test system rang up at $23,289, giving nosebleeds even to the PC Labs veterans who shrug at $5,000 gaming desktops. Read Our Falcon Northwest Tiki (2022) Review There are millions of PCs more affordable than the Tiki, but few better. The custom-tailored, more-than-immaculate Falcon Northwest is simply as good as a desktop gets, whether for ultimate gaming or workstation-class creativity and digital design. Loaded with a screaming AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D processor and over-the-top Nvidia GeForce RTX 3090 graphics card, our unbelievably fast test unit is unbelievably expensive at $4,591, but it gives you unbeatable gaming bragging rights in an ultra-compact, quiet package with simply astounding build quality. The Falcon Northwest Tiki's footprint is tiny-it takes just 4 by 14 inches of desk space and stands 13 inches tall-but it uses full-bore, industry-standard desktop components and is more upgradable than its closest rival in size, the Corsair One a200. You don’t get much choice in the game, and you definitely don’t get customization options. However, Cold Waters does a great job of teaching you the complex systems you need to command your single submarine in easy chunks. It is safe to say that my expectations were low. Prior to playing this game, my knowledge of Submarine simulators ran to 688 Attack Sub on the Sega Genesis. By no means is it a sprawling, expansive game, but by following the book with a slice of period action, it is better for it. Cold Waters takes his 1986 Soviet-era thriller and transforms it into an exciting submarine simulator. Cold Waters EuropeĪuthor Tom Clancy’s forays into gaming usually begin and end with the Rainbow Six franchise. This makes it a great choice for anyone who wants all-around trading, combat and strategy building gameplay. With a choice of more than 20 combat skills, fighting is as much about tactics as it is weaponry. A giant octopus even took hold and try to destroy my fleet at one point. Wind changes in battles can make you lose control. Set sail in a storm and you can find yourself dashed against the rocks. In fact, the world is one of the biggest enemies you will face. You will find it increasing in difficulty and quests will change depending on the decisions you make. You can even land on an island and uncover treasure when you see an X marking the spot. One of my favorite pastimes was fishing schools of fish and selling them at a port to gain money. It is ripe with beautiful, lush features that you can interact with. This environment is integral to the narrative of the game. The constantly generating world means you are never short of a new challenge or quest. Blending a naval strategy game with a role-playing narrative, you plunge into a world of pirates and treasure. King of Seas forgoes historical accuracy for all-out fun and adventure. For anyone who wants to blend a naval and land-based strategy game, this is a must-play title. To date, it has had one DLC package, the Buccaneers expansion. As you build cities on land as well as taking over the water, your reputation will begin to grow. You can build rum distilleries and create other luxuries by setting up production sites. The game has 60 Caribbean cities for you to take control of. From here, you must build an empire in a multitude of different ways. You can appoint leaders from four different classes: Merchant, Buccaneer, Explorer, and Pirate. One of the most interesting features of the game is that it is not solely about your military prowess. By assigning captains, you can take on your rivals in turn-based combat. From here, you can build a fleet from 18 historically accurate ships. You can choose from one of four empires: English, Spanish, Dutch, and French. Instead, it is sails and cannons as you take to the high seas. Gone are the heavy cruisers and destroyers inherent in many naval combat games. Port Royale Four takes you back to the battle for the Caribbean in the colonial era. It is free to play and currently has over one million active players worldwide, adding to its mass appeal even further. Flags, naval staff, paint schemes, and weapon modifications all mean World of Warships becomes a behemoth of a game. With over 300 vessels to choose from, you are spoilt for choice. In standard strategy game style, once you start to win battles you can outfit your fleet and upgrade. Instead, everything needs preempting and prepping in advance. You can’t perform turns and shots at a whim, like real naval warfare. One of the main differences between this game and others in the series is the realism of the controls. You will pair up with another player with who you can interact and build strategies. From here, you will have a choice of missions to partake in and each battle contains two teams. The game starts off by selecting your first ship. Lashings of artistic license lets you command vessels from across history in your campaigns. They blend historical accuracy and realism with entertaining strategy action. The game does what all others in its family do so well. Honda updated required special tools for servicing and maintaining the ATC 70 in its last three production years.ĭistinct characteristics between the first- and second-generation ATC 70s set them apart from other model years. The 1985 ATC70 (VIN JH3TB030*FK000001 and up) was the only version offered in white with a blue seat cover, a “70” logo, and an automatic cam chain tensioner. The 1984 model specifically received a non-pleated Honda ATC 70 seat cover. Aesthetic changes were also done on ’83-’84 versions.Modifications to technical features and servicing procedures like cable harness and routing, rear brake lever lock mechanism, and wiring diagrams were done on 19 models (VIN JH3TB030*DC800006 and up).Fuel tank and reserve capacities increased from 0.66 US gallons/2.5 liters with a 0.13-US gallon reserve to 1.1 US gallons/4.3 liters with a 0.2-US gallon/0.8-liter reserve.3-Kg increase in curb weight for the 1982 model attributed to the change in transmission.Consequently, gearshift linkage, oil pump, and transmission assemblies also changed.Transmission went from a 3-speed to a 4-speed constant mesh in 1982.Units were available in New Passion Red color. 1981 ATC 70s had a fuel tank decal change.Overall dimensions slightly increased, and the caster angle reduced to 20°.1980 models had black number plates (VIN TB03-2000001 and up).Drive chain tension, torque specifications, and cleaning procedures were likewise changed.Changes were made to how the carburetor idle and air-fuel mixture and brake were adjusted.1978 models were offered in Scarlet Red versus the 1973 version that was available in Daytona Orange with a flame decal on the tank.Below is a summarized list of enhancements done to the ATC 70: Two addendums followed shortly after the youth ATV’s comeback in 1978. Although many can only speculate the reason behind the trike missing in action from the Honda lineup, this rest gave Honda time to refine the design and some components of the vehicle. Unknown to many, the Honda ATC 70 had a three-year hiatus between 19. At this rate, outlawing the three-wheelers was inevitable. Plus, the absence of a mechanical suspension only made things worse for the vehicle. However, these developments were not enough to stop the perils that came with riding ATCs, which by then had earned them the infamous moniker “Three Wheels of Death.” The ATC70, like any other trike, was accident-prone and unideal for riding on uneven terrain. These refinements were implemented in two installments – first in 1978 and second in 1982. In the years that followed, these three-wheelers developed to include engines going from 70- to over 200-cc.ĭuring its 12-year production run, the trike temporarily went on hiatus, during which time Honda further developed the ATC 70’s body styling, engine, and drivetrain. This small three-wheeler was built by Honda engineers with kids in mind and initially released as a 72-cc trike. Although it was technically the second all-terrain cycle produced by Honda, it was the first off-road vehicle to carry the ATC trademark, which the company acquired recently before its launch. The successor to the ground-breaking US90, the Honda ATC 70 was produced from 1972 to 1984 for the ’73-’85 models. Its updated body styling and incredible power-to-weight ratio make it an excellent family vehicle and pit bike – small but powerful enough for both kids and youngsters at heart. Single-handedly spawning the manufacture of youth three-wheelers is not the only thing that makes the Honda ACT 70 a standout. Featuring a 4-speed transmission and semi-automatic clutch, flotation tires, foot guards, and easy-to-operate brakes, the Little Red was the perfect trike for youngsters and adults. The Honda ATC 70 was the first off-road vehicle for kids to carry the All-Terrain Cycle (ATC) trademark. A change in terrain? All it took were paddle tires with chevron-type cleats, and the vehicle would be ready for wading through sand and mud. Flotation tires and a robust engine were plenty enough to boost rider confidence in climbing over rocks and traversing light snow. Back in the day, kids did not need fancy tech to explore the outdoors. Seeing a Honda ATC 70 race across dirt roads brings back the thrill of yesteryears. Then begin sewing one tail securely to the hat: Go back up to the right side, sew through the pom-pom, then come back through the wrong side. Pull on the tails so that the pom pom is secure on the right side. Both yarn tails should be on the wrong side of the work. Now insert the needle through the project from the right side to the wrong side. Push one end of a long yarn tail through the eye of a tapestry needle. Here’s how to attach a pom-pom to a hat or anything else that could use a little pizzazz. Then, stop and admire your finished puff! How to Attach Your Pom-Pom When you’ve completed half the pom-pom, move on to the opposite side and repeat the same steps.Īfter cutting all the loops, fluff the pom-pom and trim around it to even out the edges. You’ll need them later to attach the pom-pom to your project. Pro Tip: When you’re cutting, make sure those long yarn tails are out of the way so you don’t cut them by accident. Cut as evenly as possible, so all the strands end up the same length. Whether your pom-pom is on or off the cardboard, use your scissors to cut the loops on one side. If you’re more comfortable with that, go for it! Doing so can be easier for some, and can create a cleaner, more even cut. Pro Tip: Some people prefer to cut the yarn pom-pom before slipping it off the cardboard. Stay tuned: It’s on the verge of turning into a pom-pom. When you feel the wraps are secure, slide that whole clump off the cardboard. If the wraps (aka your future pom-pom) aren’t secure, the strands of yarn will fall out after you cut the pom-pom. Pro Tip: If you’re worried about your yarn being too loose, cut another length of yarn and tie it around the wraps for extra security. Tie it tightly around the wraps you just made, then knot. When you feel like you’ve wrapped enough of your yarn, pull up on the length of yarn that you inserted into the cardboard in Step 3. For this tutorial, we wrapped the yarn around the cardboard about 100 (!) times. Do as much of this as you want, but remember that the more you wrap, the fuller the pom-pom. Keep wrapping the yarn around the cardboard. If you pull too tightly, the yarn may stretch, making the yarn pom-pom smaller after you cut it. Try to wrap the yarn evenly around the cardboard as you go, keeping the same amount of tension and not pulling too tightly. Hold that end of yarn in place with your thumb as you begin wrapping the yarn around the cardboard, width-wise. Lay the end of your working yarn on the edge of the cardboard, stretching it across the width of the cardboard. Leave the piece of yarn where it is for now while you move on to the next step. Cut the YarnĬut a 10″ length of your yarn and insert it into the opening in the cardboard, making sure to space it evenly on each side. The cut should be about three-quarters of the way down the length. Use your scissors to make an opening down the center of the cardboard. Just keep in mind that the width of your pom-pom will be the same as the width of the fork. Pro Tip: If you’re making mini pom-poms, use a fork instead of cardboard. For instance, if you’d like your puff to be 2″ wide, cut the cardboard so it’s 6″ x 2″. How to Make a Yarn Pom-Pom What You Needĭecide how big you’d like your pom-pom to be, then cut a rectangular piece of cardboard that’s about 6″ tall and the width you want. The below tutorial walks you through exactly how, with extra details on how to attach it to something you stitched yourself or bought at the store. If you don’t own one of those handy pom-pom-making gadgets, don’t fret: You can make one just as easily with supplies you already have at home. Sometimes you need a yarn pom-pom pronto when you’re knitting a hat, scarf, tea cozy or anything else that needs a little cheer. In addition, the mutes and rides would "drift" over time, as you continued to bounce between two tracks, making remixing difficult, especially drum mutes. Unfortunately, the automation was not smpte driven, so two tracks of your 24 track master would need to be used to write and update automation. While the automation may have been clumsy for an outside engineer, the concept was ahead of it's time - there were presets available for instant "scene changes" which included grouping changes, as well as level. However, the bandwidth on all eq's were fixed. The MCI consoles were unique in a number of ways, not the least of which were that one could select frequencies on the channel eq's between the detents, making each band somewhat sweepable. Most of the 2 tracks were ATR's, modded for 1/2" tape. I recall a couple of Mitsubishi X-850's toward the end of the studio's run. The multitracks were 3M's, again gradually replaced with Studer A800 (Mk II's?) and Otari's. Gradually, the consoles were replaced with SSL 6000 E's in two of the three rooms. Initially, all three rooms in NYC had MCI custom modded 400 series boards, all with a unique Allison automation system (continuous plastic bands instead of faders).
